Service Description

Read Write Inc. (Phonics Program) The RWI programme is an English literacy program developed by Oxford University Press (OUP) that teaches children how to read, write, and spell using phonics. It focuses on the 44 "pure sounds" of the English language, teaching children to blend sounds to read words and segment them to spell. In the beginning of the RWI course students are taught how to say and write the 24 letters of the alphabet along with a few specific sounds. Before starting students are assessed to understand the level at which they are at to assign them to the correct set and they continue from there on. The sets used in the programme are listed below: Set 1 - m, a, s, d, t, l, n, p, g, o, c, k, u, b, f, c, l, h, sh, r, j, v, y, w, th, z, ch, qu, x, ng, nk Set 2 - ay, ee, igh, ow, oo,oo, ar, or, air, ir, ou, oy Set 3 - a-e, ea, i-e, o-e,u-e, aw, are, ur, ow, oi, ai, e, oa, ew, ire, ear, ure Throughout the course of the 3 sets students will be assisted by using the coloured books which indicate level. They will move through the levels according to their ability and will be assisted with dictation and writing stories of their own. This is in order to consolidate what they have learned before they move onto other words in the set that are similar and can also be a big confusing. At times students are familiar with some sounds in the sets but are unfamiliar with others. In that event they will begin where they are and unknown sounds are then drilled to them. The RWI programme is specifically designed for young children, typically from age 3 and above, to build strong English literacy skills.
